Data sharing and reuse are essential for maximising the value of research by enabling new discoveries and insights without the need to duplicate efforts. These actions further foster collaboration and transparency, which in turn may increase reproducibility and trust in scientific findings. Yet, the level of uptake of data sharing and data reuse practices varies within the research communities.
In this series of training workshops, we explore a series of aspects related to data reusability; 1) cultural & educational, 2) legal & ethical, and 3) technical. Through a series of talks from invited speakers and guided discussions, we consider how data professionals can better support and collaborate with researchers in research data management, and help them overcome (perceived) barriers to sharing and reuse of data.
The three workshops are stand-alone events yet interrelated, and we warmly welcome you whether you wish to attend the whole day or only parts of it.
Data Reuse Workshop (First Meeting)
Overcoming (perceived) barriers to reuse of research data: Cultural and educational aspects
Date & Time : 25th of February, 09:15-11:00 CET
Description:
In this training worskhop, we consider some cultural and educational aspects of data reusability. Through a series of talks and guided discussions we consider how data professionals are supporting and collaborating with researchers in research data management and sharing. We consider what repositories should be (better) aware of regarding the challenges and opportunities that researchers face around data sharing, reproducibility and reuse, including driving forces in the research communities.
| Timeslot | Topic | Speaker(s) |
|---|---|---|
| 09:15 | Introduction | Helene N. Andreassen, UiT The Arctic University of Norway |
| 09:25 | (Perceived) barriers to data sharing and reuse: Results from a discipline-specific needs analysis | Agata Bochynska, University of Oslo, Norway and Lindsay Ferrara, NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology |
| 10:05 | Break | |
| 10:10 | Enabling reuse of research data via research sustainability workflows | Beth Knazook, Digital Repository of Ireland |

Data Reuse Workshop (Second Meeting)
Overcoming (perceived) barriers to reuse of research data: Legal and ethical aspects
Date & Time : 25th of February, 11:30-13:15 CET
Description: In this training workshop, we consider some legal and ethical aspects of data reusability. Through a series of talks and guided discussions we consider how data professionals are supporting and collaborating with researchers in research data management and sharing, including support with the CARE Principles. We consider what repositories should be (better) aware of regarding the challenges that researchers face around data ownership and ethical challenges, both as data depositors and potential data reusers. We look at what current projects are working on that aim to better inform researchers about how data has been used or can be (re)used, including more complex data access and reuse conditions.
| Timeslot | Topic | Speaker(s) |
|---|---|---|
| 11:30 | Introduction | Deborah Thorpe, DANS, The Netherlands |
| 11:40 | Data (re)use within research projects and beyond: The roles of researchers, data stewards and repositories | Aoife Coffey and Pádraig Mac Aodhgáin, University College Cork, Ireland |
| 12:10 | Break | |
| 12:15 | The CESSDA Data Citation Guide and how it might be strengthened in relation to legal and ethical aspects of data reuse | André Jernung, Swedish National Data Service |
| 12:45 | Improving the clarity of permissions and restrictions around data reuse: from intellectual property to ethical concerns | Wim Hugo, DANS, The Netherlands |
| 13:10 | Wrap up and conclusions | Deborah Thorpe, DANS, The Netherlands |
Data Reuse Workshop (Third Meeting)
Overcoming (perceived) barriers to reuse of research data: Technical aspects
Date & Time : 25th of February, 13:45-15:30 CET
Description: In this training webinar, we consider some technical aspects around data reusability. We take a particular focus on several important elements of data management that are crucial for data reuse: metadata, data documentation, and data citation. The event presents the perspectives of specialists who are developing tools to encourage the creation of rich and complete metadata, support data documentation, and tracking data impact through citation practices.

|---|---|---|
| 13:45 | Introduction | Helene N. Andreassen, UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Deborah Thorpe, DANS, The Netherlands |
| 13:55 | The complexity of metadata completeness and why it is essential to sound reuse of data | Svein Høier, NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology |
| 14:15 | Streamlining and FAIRifying the ReadMe file creation process: Meet URGE, the Universal Readme GEnerator | Dag-Even Torsøe and Ali Abdurhman Kelil, University of South-Eastern Norway |
| 14:35 | Break | |
| 14:45 | Citation and Reuse: Tracking data impact with APIs | CESSDA, Norway |
